Golf Course Information
Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is renowned for many things, but the Michigan golf experience is among the best anywhere. For each of our three signature Michigan golf courses, we sought out the finest designers the industry has to offer. The Bear by Jack Nicklaus. The Wolverine by Gary Player. Spruce Run by William Newcomb. Which is probably why Golf Magazine awarded us their coveted Silver Medal and Golf Digest rated our courses among their best. Plus we're proud to be certified as an Environmental Steward by the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program.
Outstanding levels of service complete your Grand Traverse Resort & Spa golf experience. From Player Assistant to PGA professional, our mission is to enhance your enjoyment of the game and to create a strong desire to return time and again. We look forward to exceeding your expectations and sharing our legendary golf paradise with you. We are proud to be among the top choices when it comes to Michigan golf resorts.
One Clubhouse, Three Golf Courses
The Bear Golf Course name is a tribute to its designer, Jack Nicklaus, whose trademark blonde hair earned him the nickname, "the Golden Bear." Born in 1940, Jack Nicklaus is a legend both as a player and a course designer. His competitive career spanned five decades, including 18 professional major championship titles. He is the only player in history to have won each of the game's majors at least three times, and is the only player to have completed the career "Grand Slam" on both the regular and senior tours.
Gary Player's first signature course in the state of Michigan is designed to take full advantage of the Resort's richly diverse environment. Flexibility, versatility and playability with four sets of tees allow the course to be set up to accommodate golfers of all abilities. The course is challenging for a low handicap, yet playable and enjoyable for high handicappers and is capable of being set up to be a true test for professional tournaments.
Spruce Run, the Resort's original resort course began as a nine-hole Acme Public Golf Course and was expanded to 18 holes in the 1970s. The course was redesigned as a 6,741-yard par-72 course in 1979 by former University of Michigan Golf Coach William Newcomb and renamed The Resort Course. It was given the name Spruce Run in 1992 as a reflection of the numerous spruce and fir trees that line its fairways and greens. Spruce Run was modified to a par-70 course during the development of The Wolverine.

"When players come here for golf, they experience world-class golf" says Head Pro Scott Hebert. He should know - the 2008 PGA Professional National Champion and six-time Michigan Open Champion has had the luxury of playing all over the world. And has he played! Hebert is winner of the Chicago Open and six-time winner of the Michigan PGA Professional Championship. While playing on the NGA Tour in 1999, he won the San Antonio Championship and the Tunic Championship. He is also a member of the Titleist Leadership Advisory Staff.
Hebert's ability and experience as lead instructor at the VIP Golf Academy in Florida and Assistant Professional at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa provided a natural segue for him to take over as Head Golf Professional at the Resort. With Hebert and the key golf staff at the Resort, you'll get expert instruction no matter your level of play. From members to guests, from beginners to advanced, the team is happy to accommodate anyone looking to improve their golf game.
And the options are awesome. Players can benefit from just a short lesson with Scott or with our Lead Instructor. Players can get really serious with our state-of-the-art computerized video analysis combined with the precision of the GC2 Smart Camera Technology by Foresight Sports. Choose to attend a group clinic or a one, two or three-day golf school at the Golf Academy.
